WebNathaniel Hawthorne was a nineteenth-century writer. He was born in Massachusetts on July 4, 1804, and died in New Hampshire on May 19, 1864. His book Mosses from an Old Manse is the subject of Melville's essay and reveals some of his traits as an author such as depth and darkness that not all readers understand. Weband works.
